Iya Dammons founded Baltimore Safe Haven in 2018 from her own lived experience — and built it into Maryland's only trans-led wellness center, serving over 5,000 people across housing, health, harm reduction, and legal support.

I came to BSH with nowhere to go and no ID that matched who I was. They helped me get housed, get my documents changed, and get my health back. I have my own apartment now for the first time in six years.
The Drop-In Center was the first place I felt completely safe as a trans woman. No questions, no judgment — just people who saw me. That changed everything about how I saw myself.
BSH connected me to PrEP, helped me navigate my diagnosis, and never once made me feel like a statistic. They treated me like a whole person. That's rare. That's real.

Over 40% of TLGBQIA+ youth face homelessness due to their gender identity alone — exposing them to violence, exploitation, and health crises in systems never designed to protect them.
